Creative Ways to Reuse Wood Pallets
Wood pallets can be reused for a wide range of home, garden, and retail display projects. They offer a rustic, character-rich material that is affordable and widely available. That said, quality and safety matter — not every pallet is appropriate for indoor or food-adjacent uses, and choosing the right material makes all the difference in the finished result.

Use Clean, Quality Pallets
Not every pallet is suitable for DIY use. For home and garden projects, look for pallets that are clean, dry, and structurally sound — with no cracked or missing boards, no signs of moisture damage, and no chemical treatment markings (avoid pallets stamped "MB" which indicates methyl bromide fumigation). Pallets stamped "HT" have been heat treated and are generally safe for reuse. Avoid any pallets that show staining, odor, or visible contamination. Starting with quality material saves time and produces better results.
Tips for Working with Pallet Wood
1. Inspect for Safety
Check pallets for any markings indicating chemical treatment. Look for the "HT" (heat treated) stamp which indicates safe, chemical-free wood.
2. Clean Thoroughly
Clean pallet wood with soap and water, then let it dry completely before starting your project.
3. Sand for Smooth Finish
Sand the wood to remove rough spots and splinters. Start with coarse grit and finish with fine grit for a smooth surface.
4. Seal and Protect
Apply a finish or sealant to protect your project from moisture and wear, especially for outdoor furniture.
